Favorite Backpacking Gear

Last fall I photographed a triple crown backpacker’s favorite gear for Sierra Magazine. I thought I’d repost it for the backpackers and campers out there. It’s pretty interesting to see gear that has lasted 72,000 miles. If you’d like to read about the author and master hiker Brendan Curtinrich’s must have items check out the link here

Backyard Roots Featured on the cover of Sierra Magazine!

I’m excited to have four urban farmers from my book, Backyard Roots featured in Sierra Magazine’s March/April food issue. The stories are about the innovative and determined people who I met and wrote about like Rachel Hoff and Tom Ferguson in Vallejo, CA who stopped buying groceries for a year, or Lee Kindell who started an aquaponics system at his downtown Seattle hostel. On the cover is Jonathan Chen who after surviving cancer got into growing food and got a job working with immigrants and kids in the downtown Seattle Danny Woo community garden. Alex Winstead tells how he started an organic mushroom farm in Bellingham, WA. You can get a preview at Sierra.org but buy the magazine for the entire food issue.
